UV & Coldset Printing

Coldset and UV both refer to a process used to dry ink after it has already been applied to the paper. With both coldset and UV offset printing, the paper is run through the printing press in the same way. The difference comes when it is time for the ink to dry.

Coldset printing is a process by which the ink dries gradually through evaporation and absorption into the paper. It is most commonly used on uncoated paper stocks like newsprint and hibrites. Since the ink is not set immediately, there is always a little bit of residue that remains on the paper. This is what you sometimes get on your hands if you have been holding a newspaper. Coldset is one of the most economical forms of printing that allows multiple webs to run using less expensive uncoated paper and less energy to produce the product.

With today’s slowing economy, the need to improve print products overall while maintaining costs, service and turnaround times is more prevalent than ever. We hear from publishers every day that their advertising clients want brighter, more vivid colours on better paper. They want it faster, less expensive and better.

UV process printing uses a special formula of ink that is cured by UV lamps, allowing a cold web press to print quality process colour on gloss stocks. UV process does not utilize ovens to dry the ink, so it is more energy efficient. The quality of this process allows for colours that are more vibrant and do not offset or smudge.

The UV process allows us to print on coated stocks including Pacificote and Electracote with weights up to 50lb. stock.

Without the use of solvents in UV printing, there are no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released into the atmosphere resulting in a better environment for us all. We started printing with the UV process in 2005. It is not only environmentally friendly, but energy efficient and produces rich, vibrant colours at a lower cost that heatset printing.

The UV process relies on special inks that have photo initiators in them that, when exposed to UV light, cause a chain reaction that forms a solid, dry ink with vivid colours and deep rich blacks. Our clients are consistently amazed at the quality of product we are able to produce through this process.

We also offer combination publications with one web printing with UV process and the balance on conventional cold web stocks. This is a great way to create impact by using glossy stock on the outside or your product while keeping your costs minimal.

PrePress

Van Press offers a complete electronic workflow to maximize speed and minimize problems. Our experienced staff will assist you with any questions you may have and will walk you through the process required to produce your files. Our staff is here to answer your questions 24 hours a day Monday through Friday.

In order for the printing process to run smoothly, it helps if you know a little bit about how the whole thing works. The following are the steps your printing job goes through before it goes to press.

1. Receive files from the customer via ftp, CD/DVD, Flash Drive or email.
2. Copy and make a working file: preflight for any issues or problems, confirm page, image and bleed size, check for font issues and image resolution.
3. Rip files.
4. Impose pages using Preps imposition software.
5. Create proofs for in-house or customer approval (hard or soft proofs).
6. Make corrections if required.
7. Make plates using direct to plate technology.
8. Check plates and send to press.
9. Create ink data that is sent to the press to preset the ink keys (Perretta).
10. Check printed copy for content, fold & trim.
